Woman, son get lifer in dowry death case
KANPUR: The additional district and sessions judge II of Kanpur Nagar, S P Tewari convicted one Dinesh alias Pintoo and his mother, Shivrani, in a case of dowry death, here on Thursday. The duo were sentenced to life imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs 5,000 each.
According to prosecution case, Pintoo, a resident of Gujaini in Ratanlal Nagar under Govind Nagar police station, was married to Rajo, daughter of Om Prakash of Shuklaganj, Unnao, on May 5, 2006. He was demanding a sum of Rs 50,000 or a plot for business from his in-laws. When they expressed their inability to fulfil his demand, Pintoo and his mother poured kerosene over Rajo and set her on fire on September 22, 2006, around 4.00pm. Rajo later succumbed to her burn injuries.
In another judgment, an accused named Shamshad suffered a heart attack when he was convicted and sentenced by additional district and sessions judge II Rama Bai Nagar, C M Dixit.
The presiding judge, in a murder case, punished Shamshad and Abdul Hasan with 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and fined a sum of Rs 5,000 from each. The judge acquitted the two co-accused, Naseer and Nafees, for want of evidence.
According to case file, the accused, a resident of Fattepur under Moosanagar police station, had attacked a fellow villager, Shamim Ahmad, on December 16, 2008, when he was guarding his agricultural fields. Armed with lathis and sticks, he had thrashed Shamim severely as a result of which, he succumbed to his injuries later. The reason behind the assault was a dispute over land.
