30-year-old woman killed for ‘dowry’
LUDHIANA: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly killed for dowry by her husband late on Sunday night. While the police are yet to know how she was killed, a case has been registered against her husband who is missing since the incident.
The couple has two children, a six-year-old girl and a two-month-old boy.
''We have registered a case against the accused under Section 304 B ( dowry death) and sent the body for post-mortem to Civil hospital. The cause of her death will be clear after the examination,'' said investigation officer, Bittan Kumar, incharge of Jagatpuri police post.
According to police sources, the deceased, Sushma Devi, was married to Sagar Singh, a resident of Ropar, in 2003. The couple had settled in Ludhiana and bought a house in Haibowal area. However, Sagar, a stock exchange broker, had suffered major losses in business forcing them to sell their house four months ago. They were staying in a rented accommodation since then.
Sources said Sagar pressurised his wife to bring dowry from her brothers to buy a new house and restart his business. The couple had regular fights over the issue and Sushma was often beaten up for refusing to ask her brothers for money.
On November 3, Sagar and Sushma had gone to her parent's house in Amritsar where a party was organised for their two-month-old boy. The couple ended up in a fight again and Sagar returned to Ludhiana, leaving her behind.
On Sunday morning, Sushma's bother Arun dropped her back to Ludhiana so that things could be resolved between the couple. In the evening when he called her up to check if everything was fine, Sushma told him that she was being tortured by her husband who was also threatening to kill her. Sources said, Arun received a call at 2.30 am informing him of the death of his sister. He rushed to Ludhiana with other family members and reported the incident to police here
